Julia Fractal Tutorial - Fractal Detail Changes

Fractal ImageThe Julia fractals X & Y parameters are what controls the changes within any formula, and even slight changes can dramatically alter the resulting fractal.

Step 1

Fractal Image As I mentioned on the previous page, we can also change the numbers to the right of the decimal point and even those these are measured in tenths, hundredths etc. they can result in dramatic differences. I am going to change the "6" to "0" (zero) to the RIGHT of the decimal in the Julia "X" field, leaving the first number (2) the same.

Step 2

Fractal ImageVoila! Another substantial change from our basic fractal again! Hopefully by now you are beginning to see a new door of fractal exploration opening before you! The potential for many, many images from one formula is possible. You will discover that some formulas offer more potential than others for changes with these paramters, but all have some potential.

Step 3

Fractal ImageAnother way of fundamentally changing the fractal, is by determining the degree of detail we wish to have in the image. We can achieve this by changing the "M-Set" field in the parameters. I covered this in the basic tutorial but it's worth reviewing again. In general, the lower the number, less detail. The higher the number, more detail. Pretty simple! ;) Yet another door opens! Because this image is a bit "busy" I will lower the M-set value.

Step 4

Fractal ImageThis is the result of lowering the M-set. As you can see, I am getting specific results by changing these parameters. I am not just letting random chance dictate what I find as I continue to explore this formula. Let's move on to page 5.
