Fractal Tutorial Page 2 - Working with color

Fractal ImageOne thing to understand early on is that the formula, or changes to it via Julia transformations, etc. can dramatically affect the color. It is not just the color filters, color controls, RGB values etc.The formula itself will tell which pixals are filled in etc. That said, let's move on!

Step 1

Fractal ImageOkay, are you ready? You should see this image in the TZ program window. ( I have cut off part of the program windows in this tutorial to facilitate faster downloads of the images. ) There are many color variables in this fractal program to work with so be patient and follow along!

Step 2

Fractal ImageThe first variable affecting color are filters. There are dozens of filters which all affect the color in different ways. This requires time and experimentation to discover what appeals to you.

I would recommend using one image and changing these various filters to see the effect that each has on the image. In this first image you can see that no filters have been selected from the first filters menu. We are about to change that!

Step 3

Fractal ImageWe are going to select filter 50 from the Filters-1 menu on the toolbar. You can see the partially revealed image after the change that already shows a favorable transformation from the original image.

Step 4

Fractal ImageThis is the image after changing the filter selection from None to filter 50, much more appealing than what we started with! The image we started with at first glance looked like a "throw-away", but this very first slight change we made illustrates how critical color is, and how color can reveal, or hide, important features of a fractal. Ready for the next step? Let's continue to page 3.
